Getting ready to move has made me want to do a little fix-er-upping around the house. All I needed was a little help from one of my favorite stores:
THE HOME DEPOT!
I love The Home Depot. It smells so good, like wood and other yummy things. I like looking at all of the gadgets and tools and trinkets that I have no idea how to use or what their purpose is, and imagining all the things I could create. Another kind of store I could spend all day in is an office supplies store, for the same kinds of reasons, although I know a little bit more about the functions of office supplies than home furnishing supplies. (The more I type The Home Depot, the more I am hearing in my head "The Home
De Pot". It is a strange word, depot.)
De Pot". It is a strange word, depot.)
Anyway, thanks to that wonderful store, I picked up all the supplies I needed for two fun projects.
First, I tackled this ugly old filing cabinet that had been hiding in the closet:
And this is after I cleaned it and removed the tacky stickers. I think it was either going to be thrown out or re-done, so I chose to try the latter.
First, I spray painted a coat of primer all over the cabinet.
The next day, I spray painted the handles sky blue by creating a makeshift shield out of painting/masking tape and paper.
Then I spray painted the frame the same color and the drawers a bright shade of orange. Sitting there all by themselves they looked like they should have been in a commercial for The Home Depot itself, they were that bright and orange. I was a little surprised about how intense they were, but I think the end result is cute, when they are paired with the sky blue.
It is a bright, quirky cabinet, but that was my goal, so I'm satisfied. I haven't decided whether it is going to be a craft supplies storage space and/or night stand for me, a space for Kimball's clothes, a space for Kimball's toys, or a regular old filing cabinet. I'll figure that out later. But at least I know it will be cute, whatever it is!
The next project seems kind of anti-climactic after that, but it was no less satisfying. We are currently using this cupboard for our pantry.
It is in great shape, but kind of old, and I was getting tired of the little knobs. Well, actually, one of them fell off and wouldn't go on again, so that is what inspired this little project. Another trip to that blessed of stores, The Home Depot, and Kimball and I came home and screwed on these little beauties:
Just a little touch that makes it feel like new!

Those projects look GREAT! It's absolutely amazing what a little paint and something as small as knobs can do...
(I have to agree with you...Home Depot is the best smelling store in the world. Nothing beats the smell of fresh sawdust.)
The filing cabinet is great! I love it.
I also like the knobs you chose for the cupboard. Very cute!
i LOVE home improvement stores! sometimes i just walk up and down the lumber aisles smelling the wood and getting weird looks from people. sniff, sniff, mmmmm...
also, i LOVE the way your cabinet turned out. are you sure you aren't a boise state fan?
Are we related? Never in a million years would I be able to pull off a home improvement makeover that turns out this cute! It could have something to do with the fact that I HATE Home Depot-ish stores--I feel a headache coming on just thinking about them. I am so proud of you, Ash!!! GOOD JOB!!!
Happy 19th, little man! Grandmama loves you :D
I love your make over projects! Good job!
I love the filing cabinet! That looks amazing! I want one just like it. =)
That cabinet looks great! It always amazes me how a quick coat of spray paint can make something old and icky look wonderful and new. :)
I feel the same way about office supply stores. I absolutely love office supplies! I think I like them because they are supposed to make you feel organized and less cluttered and I despise being cluttered!
Your little makeovers look great! It is amazing what a new piece of hardware or paint color can do to something.
