Kimball Tidbits

Last night before I went to bed, I tried to open Kimball's door to check on him. The heat had made the door expand so much that I couldn't open it without it making a loud scraping noise, so I just decided to let it be. Luckily, Jordan decided to have a go at it, and when we looked inside Kimball's crib, there he was, fast asleep, but with no diaper on! His onesie was unsnapped and rolled up past his belly button, and the diaper was lumped right above his head like a little hat. Jordan swept the mattress with his hand, and we were astonished and relieved to find it dry. Kimball stirred and lifted up his head to look at us. I quickly scooped him up, deposited him on the changing table, and slid a new diaper on him, before the abrupt and startling awakening could prompt any accidents. Kimball has taken his diaper off in his crib once before, and that time we did have to change the sheets. Everyone pray that this is not becoming a habit! If there is one thing I hate more than doing the dishes, it's changing the baby sheets.

Kimball is also developing quite the preference in music, and his current favorite album is the soundtrack from "The Music Man". We listen to it in the car every time we venture out. At the farmer's market a few weeks ago, we saw a cute quartet of trombone players with pink and white pinstriped vests and straw hats. Kimball was mesmerized. I taught him how to mimic the playing of a trombone, and since then he has latched onto "Seventy-Six Trombones" and the rest of the songs from that musical.* The instant a song ends in the car (and he can tell when the end is coming), he waves his hand to hasten more music. If I dare put in another musical, say "Hello, Dolly!" or "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", he whines and makes his trombone sign. But instead of the dramatic in and out arms-length movements that I tried to teach him, he puts his thumb and pointer finger together, with his other fingers extended, and taps his lips. It looks like he is moving a cigarette back and forth from his little mouth.

Yesterday morning, I put in the DVD of the musical and his world exploded. It was actually kind of a bad thing, since he completely stopped eating his breakfast. Here is a clip of him watching the movie. Not much is happening because he is so entranced. At the end is a cute clip of him whispering "hi" that I couldn't help including.

*Another song Kimball loves is "Marian the Librarian", because of his Aunt Marian. He says her name (in his language) every time it plays.

That's so cute! I love watching kids grow and seeing their personalities develop.

Crud! I'm probably going to get a lot of crap for this, but I have never, ever in my entire life seen "The Music Man". But Kimball sure is cute! When Addison was a little bit younger, she would throw a fit when I turned the car off and rap music was playing. I think she likes the beat. Or else I have a gangsta on my hands! LOL

Hey Ashley!

You can tell Kimball that Music Man is President Monson's favorite musical, too. The young chap's chosen well. ;)

I love the way you draped your clothes in your yard sale--that tree never looked so good!

And I LOVE your post from the mouth of babes. The hot sauce and string cheese is almost too much. Too much! HA!!

When are you coming our way anyway?

Hahahaha! I love the way he totally ignores your comments to him as he is riveted to the video! It's like he has no time for Mama cuz he's got major entertainment right in front of his eyes! I love your description that his world exploded upon seeing the DVD. Actually, he could do worse. Can you say, Teletubbies? Ew. "The Music Man" is totally worthy of his allotted video time.

"Hi" back at you, Kimball! So cute!!!

Madeline went through a phase where she'd undress herself at bedtime. We started putting her zip or button up pjs on backwards so she couldn't get them off. After a week or two she stopped trying and we were able to turn them back around. Hope that helps!

I have some blackmail stories about Jen and her diaper escapades! Funny memories, but not fun at the time! Putting pj's on backwards sounds like a good solution! I wish I had thought of that all those years ago!

The backwards pajamas is a great idea. I'll definitely try it out in cooler weather if the undressing continues to be a problem, but right now it is so hot (no AC!) that Kimball goes to bed only in a onesie or loose, short-sleeved, 2-piece pajamas.

Amen to hating changing sheets. Crazy tight sheets, awkward mattress, and in-the-way bumper pads. No bueno.

(Haha, I love that video! It's so funny when they're so engrossed that they just completely ignore you. Cute.)
