Thanks to a gift card and some handy-dandy grandparents (thank you!), Jordan took me on a date this afternoon to see James Cameron's new movie, Avatar. (Read a review and some history of the movie here.) From the commercials and previews I thought it looked like a possibly decent and fun movie, but not great. But I have to say that, for me, this was the most surprising movie of the year. We both loved it!
First, the special effects were amazing. I'm not one to care about special effects, but even I noticed that these looked incredible. We also got to see it in 3-D. It wasn't distracting at all and made everything look great. It was a lot of fun to see all of the color and detail of the planet.
Second, we thought the storyline was engaging. I admit that it was somewhat formulaic, and even predictable at times, but not too cheesy, at least not to us. And they didn't over-do the love story, which I appreciated.
It was a long movie, but always fast paced, so I didn't feel antsy or tired. We would definitely reccommend it. It was gorgeous, even epic-feeling at times, but still a sci-fi fantasy/adventure, so just take it with a grain (or two) of salt. Certainly it was a great way to spend an afternoon out with each other!

I am glad to hear you say that. I didn't know what to think about that movie.
Thank you for your review. I have the same feelings you had before seeing it. Now, I'll rest easier and be more willing to see it.
Date night is always fun, no matter what you do!
I was also skeptical about this movie, but I have heard good reviews from several people, including you guys, so now I'm thinking I should check it out.
