So Kimball is a very, very gassy little guy, and I think it helps a little (but not a ton) if I watch what I eat. But this is very frustrating since there are many foods that are supposed to make babies gassy. The ones that I think bother him the most are anything dairy--milk, yogurt, cheese--, beans, onions, very spicy food, chocolate, and fried food. Apparently broccoli and cabbage are bad for sensitive babies too.
So now we are trying very hard to come up with recipes that do not have beans, dairy, or onions, and this has turned out to be extremely difficult, considering the fact that I am practically addicted to milk and cheese, and we usually go through a couple onions a week in our meals. So we need ideas! Does anyone have any suggestions for recipes that might work for us? I'm hoping this fussy period won't last forever, but for now I am going to do my best to watch what I eat. If you have ideas or recipes, please share!

Have you made split pea soup, ever since you confessed to me that you've never had it (for shame!)? That's really cheap, and you can put ham in it if you're afraid it won't have enough flavor without onions.
-that weird kale/pineapple/peanut butter recipe I gave you once
-I'm thinking potatoes for some reason. Maybe a shepherd's pie?
-I'm also thinking about eggplant, particularly cut into slices and roasted. Then they could be eaten on a sandwich or put on pasta with other roasted vegs.
-We were talking about a frittata recipe you found, maybe you should also look for quiche recipes, and leave out the cheese.
I only have a second so I'll give my main tip and be back later. Madeline could not stand me eating dairy. I switched to rice or soy milk. Vanilla if I was drinking or having it on cereal, plain if I was using it in a recipe. Used it in soups and all sorts of stuff and it worked great.
here are things I ate a lot of - it was really hard for me to avoid dairy, mostly cheese.
lots of pasta with different sauces (red sauce, pesto sauce)
grilled or broiled chicken with veggie sides. do you have a panini press or george foreman grill? that way you can grill indoors, otherwise I put a cookie cooling rack on top of a cookie sheet and broil the chicken.
non dairy soups or dairy soups made with rice/soy milk.
rice dishes and stir fry
that's all I can think of for now.
Have you tried giving him Mylicon, the gas-relief medicine for babies? You can get it at any store. Will had pretty bad gas at times too, and Mylicon at feedings helped him from getting the crying, in incessant pain gas.
Christine--I actually did have split pea soup a little while after Kimball was born. It seemed to make him worse! I'm not sure what it was. Maybe there were onions in it (I didn't make it). It was good though!
Katie--Thanks for the suggestion of soy/rice milk. I have been drinking rice milk, but haven't really thought about cooking with it. That's a good idea.
Allyson--Mylicon helps just a little bit. We've discovered that it definitely works better than the off-brands for some reason.
Hm, maybe peas are too "beany" in a way. Yeah, I substitute soy milk for regular milk in all recipes and it's never been a problem.
Ashley, just wanted to remind you that since soy milk is made from soybeans it might not be a good substitute. :)
Rachel - yeah, Ashley and I were discussing that. However, we theorized that perhaps soymilk would have less of an effect than plain soybeans, or dairy milk. Though I think Ashley said she was usually drinking rice milk, rather than soy...?
Yeah I'm just having rice milk now. Thanks for all of the suggestions!
Ash, look at what a good mother you are to make sacrifices for Baby Kimball's sake! About the soy milk, I have no idea if this is true, but a friend of mine told me that soy milk is not the best for boys because it has estrogen in it so it can throw the baby's boy-hormones out of whack. She suggested the rice milk instead. Who knows? Hang in there sweetheart. You are the best!
I had a really good recipe that I was going to share with you and then I remembered that it has parmesan cheese in it. I don't have any suggestions for you, since I didn't breastfeed for too long. Sorry!!!
Ask Grandma Judy for help! Jordan was a pretty gassy little guy himself. I won't tell the story about him here--but I'm sure you've heard it. He really suffered for awhile.
You are SO special to sacrifice for him! Someday you'll look back and realize that it only took a short while and that both of you were blessed by it.
Love--eternally,
GGH & GGH
