I watched the movie again a few months ago. I think it may be the movie I have watched more times than any other movie. It is a great recreation of the story in the book. Plus, you can't go wrong with something that won 10 Oscars. Even at almost four hours long spaced on two DVDs, it never feels long to me. And the score is beautiful! 1939 was a good year for movies (Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington…).
Clark Gable said he had never even heard of Rhett Butler, much less read the novel, when friends, newspapers, and lovers of the book all demanded that he be the one to portray the blockade runner in the upcoming movie. After reading the book, he was intimidated by the part, but went ahead with it. The scene where Rhett carries Scarlett up the huge flight of stairs in their mansion was filmed and refilmed so many times that Clark Gable was starting to puff a bit. The director asked for one more take. Afterwards he told Gable that they had already gotten a good take of the scene, he just wanted to see if Gable could carry Vivien Leigh up the stairs one more time! Two of my favorite dresses of Scarlett's are the white and green dress that she wears to the barbeque at Twelve Oaks (above) and the blue and yellow dress that she wears in Atlanta with Frank Kennedy. I love watching her costumes reflect the changing styles over time.
Where am I going with this? Well, one time several years ago (has it been that long?) my friends and co-workers at the Bean Museum and I had a fun party/talent show in the auditorium of the museum. My friend's husband's talent was to take our pictures, then photoshop our faces onto the character of our choice. Some of the hilarious results included Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter characters. Here is my original picture:
And here is the finished result! Yessss!!!
If you haven't read GWTW or see the movie, go and do both this summer! You may borrow them from me, if you wish. What is your favorite book/movie of all time?

Oh, how I love GWTW! I love period films, and I love old films, so this one is just tops!
Have you ever watched the Thin Man movies? They are probably my favorite films of all time. They star William Powell and Myrna Loy (two of my favorite actors) as Nick and Nora Charles. Nick Charles is a retired detective who keeps getting pulled out of retirement to solve crazy cases, with Nora sticking her nose in every chance she gets. They are my favorite on screen couple- loving, funny, sweet, and a bit screwy. Look for a young Jimmy Stewart in the second Thin Man film "After the Thin Man." Oh, and Nick and Nora own a feisty Wire Fox Terrier named Asta who always reminds me of Toby. I actually plan on owning two fox terriers one day named Nick and Nora. :)
Haha, I didn't mean to go on so much about the Thin Man movies. I just really love them!
I remember "watching" a Thing Man movie at a sleepover at your house a loooong time ago. I don't think we got very far. We watched the first Thin Man movie with my family a few months ago. I loved it! I've been thinking that I need to watch some more. And I already knew about Asta because you had told me way back when, and because he is in every other NY Times crossword puzzle!
GWTW is of my all-time faves, too, both the book and the movie, which is unusual for me. Scarlett is such a force, just like you mentioned. She can be a pill sometimes, but I honestly admire her tenacity and proactive nature to make her life what she wants it to be. Sometimes I wish I could do more of that.
Have you ever seen this clip? Jump ahead to about the 3:30 mark and watch until around the 4:15 mark. One of the best moments in tv history, in my opinion :D

Anyway, you look gorgeous as Scarlett! Such pretty eyes and perfect mouth! Clark Gable should have waited a half of a century or so . . .
please don't hate me for this, but i really hate gone with the wind. i want to punch scarlett in the face! sorry, but that's just the way it is.
i do, however, LOVE the wizard of oz movie and books-yes, books, plural, there are 15, each as wonderful as the last. also, the chronicles of narnia. i read them (all 7) every year. is that weird?
That's ok, I want to punch her in the face too! Somehow, that doesn't keep me from loving the story, though!
I never realized that there were 15 Wizard of Oz books. I have only read one, I think. I LOVE the Chronicles of Narnia. They are magical every time I read them. I only wish I had known about them as a child.
Mom, that Carol Burnett clip was hilarious! I watched the whole thing, part one and part two.
I love Scarlett! I think Vivian Leigh who played her is one of the greatest beauties of all time. The stairs you referred to are in the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia. I have been there many times and stood on those very stairs! I have also read that Clark Gable had very bad breath. Oh well. You make a beautiful Scarlett! Love that idea! My favorite move of all time is "White Christmas".
I loved both the book and the movie as well. I think Scarlett is a love/hate personality. At times, you love to hate her! Though I have to admit that my all time favorite book and movie is "To Kill A Mockingbird". I love them so much that I am trying to talk Randy into naming our daughter Harper after the books author. (I'm losing this battle!)
Jen! Tell Randy you have my full and 100% supportive vote!!! I have heard Harper as a girl's name, and I love it. Harper Morris has a great ring to it. And To Kill a Mockingbird is right up there with GWTW on my favorites list!
I don't know that I could pick an absolute all-time favorite, but I'd have to say one of my favorites is "The Importance of Being Earnest". The dialogue is full of twists and turns...I catch new things nearly every time I see it (I don't have it in written form).
