Even more Star Wars--on the Beach!

Guest blogger: Jordan

I know that it's a rare thing for me to contribute to the family blog but I wanted to make it clear who was responsible for our son's loss of innocence.

Kimball is now totally, completely, even frantically addicted to Star Wars...and it's all my fault.

It all started with Kimball's mini-obsession with this year's Super Bowl Volkswagon commercial where a little boy dresses up as Darth Vader. Convinced that Darth Vader's name is "Star Wars," Kimball has been increasingly interested in the boy's apparent talent in using the force.

Sensing an opportunity to geekify my son I've been patiently inserting suggestions over the dinner table that we dress up as Star Wars characters for Halloween. Kimball grew more and more excited by the idea which culminated in the momentous events of October 8th, 2011.

Yesterday (Daddy Day), I rode my bike with Kimball's bike trailer to the mall where we have one of those temporary "Halloween Shops." As we went to the children's section I had to maneuver Kimball's trailer around the store to block the scary costumes from his view. He had no idea why we were there. I found a Darth Vader costume that was about his size and asked an employee if we could try it on. Kimball, still confused as to why we were there, got out of the trailer and let me dress him in the costume. As soon as he realized what he was wearing he put on the Darth Vader mask, hugged me and said, "Daddy, me so happy!"

My heart immediately melted. I looked past the price tag bought the costume and Kimball has hardly worn anything else since. We took Kimball to Windansea Beach tonight to let "Star Wars" enjoy the salty breeze. As Ashley and Kimball have both been pretty sick I thought this evening was a great opportunity to watch Star Wars: A New Hope for the first time as a family. Kimball was absolutely transfixed and has already started to reenact scenes from the movie. He thinks Yoda is "cute." Although he's slightly upset to find out that Darth Vader is in fact a "bad guy," He is also adamant to let us know that he is a nice Darth Vader. He says, "Me a nice Star Wars, I love Mommy, too much...big hug." Although I'm tempted to point out that Anakin Skywalker also loved his mommy "too much," I think I'm going to leave it right there.

Oh how I love these pictures and this amazing little boy. He's so creative! Today he was Luke. Luke do this, Luke do that. But by bedtime he was "Star Wars" again. So glad you bought him this costume Jordan!

Aw, my heart melted too, Jordan, when you wrote that Kimball hugged you and told you how happy he was! This will be one of those standout childhood memories for him, I'm sure. What a good daddy you are to him!

The pictures of Kimball on the beach are killers--so adorable! You can almost see the envy in the other kids' eyes in that second pic, can't you? Dave and I hooted over the photo in your album of Darth Vader riding on his big, bad Winnie the Pooh choo-choo train, haha!!!!

I approve of Kimball's geek training, Jordan! Loved the pictures and the hilarious captions. So, are you and Ashley going to go with the Star Wars theme for *your* Halloween costumes? I hope so!
